Violin repair is a practice all to itself.
Violin makers are assumed to be violin repairers as well. Though
they may possess many similar tools the preceding statement is not
always true. A successful, enterprising instrument maker has little
time to devote to repairs. A violin making hobbyist should be hesitant
of tackling repairs on high-end, expensive instruments or even a
lesser but cherished family heirloom.
A good violin repairer will follow tried and
true methods established for hundreds of years by his predecessors
and constantly search out and read books on the subject whether
very old or newly published. He or she will rely heavily on common
sense while keeping abreast of new developments in violin manufacturing
and accessories.
Another must to improving tone and providing
an excellent set up is the ability to play. The repairer needs
to be able to play well to access the instrument before and after
the repairs, restoration or set-up. Often, an instrument that has
sat idle for many years then refurbished, will benefit greatly
from just an hour of energetic playing. Find a repairer that loves
to play!
A good repairer will closely examine an instrument
before giving a quote. It should be their intention to never have
to make the "I
found something else" telephone call even if it means doing
a little extra for no charge.
