Viola Repair
and Restoration Services
Most specialized violin tools accommodate working
on the viola as well. The violin spool clamps fit on the standard
violas. If the new, thicker viola catches on we will have to use
cello spool clamps to glue tops back on. Many of the principals
are the same as violin as far as doing repairs, restorations and
set-up. When it comes to playing a viola there is a huge difference
compared to violin. I know for a fact that the 16.5 viola requires
much more strength and stamina to play. My hat 's off to viola
players!
The viola is similar to a violin but with
an important difference. It is made stronger to withstand the
extra tension of the "C" string. The 3/4 viola is the smallest and
is similar in size to a full size violin. Violins should not be
strung with viola strings. The extra tension exerted by the "C" string
will likely damage the violin. I have seen violin tail blocks ripped
out of position. Not pretty but good for business.
Until recently the viola with
the body length of 16.5 inches was the largest. The fairly new
17 inch viola has not met much success. Makers and even several
factories are attempting to reinvent the instrument thinking that
the ribs (sides) need to be much deeper. I had the pleasure of
setting one up. It was interesting.
