Catherine studied at the Royal College of Music in London where her cello teachers were Christopher Bunting and Eileen Croxford. She graduated in 1983 with a GRSM and an ARCM Teachers Diploma.

"We work together from whatever your starting point is in a structured and organised way. A process is set in motion that evolves endlessly in which we develop technical skills, musical understanding and listening abilities."   Click here to visit Catherine's website.

Solo cello performances, inventing exciting new cello sounds, as well as honouring tradition with sonorous ones, are what I was born to do! If you like the cello, you’ve come to the right place! Enjoy!

Cellos

Cello seam separations, cracks in the top / back / sides, dropped sound posts, warped bridges, fingerboard and nut issues are regular concerns when repairing cellos.

The cello is subject to many of the ills that violins experience plus has some extra problems of its own. One cause for many repairs is the soft bag which many beginners use instead of a proper case. Understandably, a beginner wants to get the best cello they can afford. This usually means they skimp on the case. Even a well padded bag will only protect against scratches and dents in the finish. Often the bag gives a false sense of security. Beginners going out for lessons expect too much from their soft bag. Broken necks on cellos is a very common repair request and an experienced repairer will be well practiced at the task.

Bigger and very expensive tools are a necessity for a repairer with lots of cello work. Fitting new pegs is quite the undertaking compared to violin. Not to say it can't be done well and in good time with the specialized tools. Tail pin problems are very common. There are lost holding screws, stripped rings, improper fitting tail pins and even pierced or lost rubber tips. The "woodworker" luthier now has to concern himself with metal working too.
